Having been told I would eat the best grilled cheese sandwich in world in a small deli in Forest Hill, south east London. I knew I had to go there ASAP!
So this afternoon my friend and I went along to order this supposed amazing cheese sandwich. I mean how good could it be?!
Ok so first impressions, we got a table straight away ( rare on a bank holiday) and the place had giant cheeses and meats scattered all over the shop. Giant green olives by the counter, baked goods, freshly made bread, Monmouth coffee and pieminster pies, cheese platters for under a tenner. The list goes on!
Amazing.
I ordered a 4 cheese and salami grilled sandwich which comes with leeks and onions mixed in with the cheese, tomato chutney and a side salad. I was not disappointed!
Seriously runny, pleasingly crispy and nice and strong. The roof of my mouth was achingly itchy ( in a good way) because the cheddar was so strong. I gebuinly would have ordered another one if it had been appropriate!
Basically I'm going every time I come to forest hill and It will be in my dreams for the rest of the week.
Go!

The Fat Delicatessen
Hi All
I wanted to tell you all about a cute wee deli in Balham, in South London. I have been here a few times and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience each time. I cant really say what made me walk in, maybe the cheeky little pig sign or the word deli. I'm not sure, but I'm sure as hell glad I went in!
Its different because it is the only one of its kind in Balham that I know off, a full on Deli but with an area where you can order the excellent cheese and meats on offer, sit down and have civilised meal. But its gets the balance right because its casual yet sophisticated. I would recommend this for a date, a couple of friends who fancy a catchup with some picky bits. After a few glasses of wine you are certainly going to buy the goodies from behind the deli to take home. Bit dangerous!
Lining the walls are loads of interesting Spanish and Italian condiments and its very hard not to take your eyes of them. Last time I went I bought a tomato jam and a hazelnut chocolate spread - both really excellent and in pretty jars. Could have made great gifts but then again you could eat them yourself!
I would recommend this for a date, a small group who fancy a catchup with some picky bits and even just popping in to buy something to take to someones for dinner.
Great Value, lost of choice and friendly service, they make hampers up for you and you can hire the place out for a party. (Maybe a cheese and wine party - see earlier successful BYOC night Nov 2011)
